about

Monsoon: Live @ The Toronto Indo-Jazz Festival
Debut Double Album recording two years in a row 'Live' at Canada's only Indo-Jazz World Music festival.

This debut release by Toronto's Indo-Jazz ambassadors 'Monsoon' features a unique and eclectic mix of original music which blends two rich traditions from both sides of the world. The fiery and explosive western Jazz language of improvisation is fused together with the sounds and colours of Indian Classical music to create a truly worldly sound.

Monsoon is a collective of Toronto musicians led by Saxophone Brothers Jonathan & Andrew Kay and Bassist Justin Gray. Having spent a majority of the last 6 years living and studying Indian Classical music in Kolkata, India, the three Jazz musicians envisioned and created an ensemble that could perform new original music in the Jazz language and format but enchantedly enhanced with the mystic sounds and exotic colours of India.

Featuring some of the finest Indo-Jazz and World musicians in Canada, Monsoon is:

Jonathan Kay - Tenor & Soprano Saxophones, Bansuri, Woodwinds
Andrew Kay - Alto & Soprano Saxophones, Tibetan Bowls, Percussion, Woodwinds
Justin Gray - Electric Bass, Upright Bass, Bass Veena
Ravi Naimpally - Tabla & Percussion
Adam Teixeira - Drums, Cymbals, Percussion
Todd Pentney - Piano & Keyboards

with Special Guests:
Toronto Indo-Jazz Festival 2010: Derek Gray - African Percussion
Toronto Indo-Jazz Festival 2011: Alastair Kay - Trombone

Leading the Indo-Jazz scene in Toronto for the past 6 years, Monsoon has not only gathered a strong following of adventurous listeners, they have also cultivated a close community of supporters through Monsoon-Music and the Toronto Indo-Jazz Festival. With the mission to create a warm community of music listeners and lovers, specifically those interested in India, Monsoon-Music has successfully held 5 Toronto Indo-Jazz Festivals, featuring various different musicians and groups from around the world. Numerous appearances by Monsoon, Tasa, Ravi Naimpally over the years have been complimented by international artists, NYC's Indo-Pak Coalition, Kolkata's Pandit Shantanu Bhattacharyya & Srimati Durba Bhattacharrya, Escola De Samba, as well as special guests George Koller, Ted Quinlan, David Mott, Alastair Kay & Derek Gray.

“A Canadian Indo-Jazz group pushing the boundaries in our multi-cultural community by combining the
essences of India with the modern sounds of Jazz.”

"It takes Canadians the really blend things together without simplifying them" Paul Corby @ The Toronto Indo-Jazz Festival 2010

"A visionary new festival, brilliantly realised, holistically executed" Live Music Report 2007
